  1. Just happened upon your blog from the cross-posted “How to make butter” entry on DailyKos. Love your philosophy (particularly that regarding voluntary poverty) and am doing many of the same things here in Michigan after moving from the west coast (Bellingham, WA) four years ago. Also a big proponent of raw milk — to the point that I now run a raw milk herdshare dairy. Looking forward to reading more!

    • Thank you, David! I farmed up on Whidbey Island in 2009 and took a couple oh-god-I’m-going-crazy-from-social-isolation trips up to Bellingham, just to sit in a brewery, have a pint, wander around town a bit and be around people, even though I’m kind of shy about chatting up strangers so never would actually meet anyone. It was just good to be around people. It’s kind of ridiculous since Bellingham was such a long drive and it took so much gas—pretty against my current philosophies—but I’m no stranger to giving into emotional impulses even when it means acting against my own stated intentions. Anyway, I really liked Bellingham and both times I went up there I gave that ferry to Alaska a good long eyeing with the fleeting thought of what it might be like to just jump on it and go to Alaska and see what happens.

Never did that, of course, just a fun little dream.

Love that you’re running a raw milk herdshare dairy and hope it’s going well. I’ll have to go poke around your blog. I hope you stick around and comment on future posts. Thanks again.
